Overview Of Sleep Apnea
One of the conditions which adversely affect our sleep is Sleep Apnea. It is a serious disorder where a person’s breathing is interrupted for a brief period of time, several times in a night. This can result in a reduced oxygen supply to the blood and subsequently to the brain of the person, which in turn can disrupt the normal bodily functions. Sleep apnea can result in a wide range of complications, such as high blood pressure, heart failure, diabetes, depression, headaches etc.
There are 3 types of sleep apnea:
- Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA): This is the most common kind of sleep apnea, where the airway is partially or completely blocked during sleep. This hampers the airflow to the lungs and leads to a reduction in blood oxygen levels. It may be caused due to a deviated septum, obesity, tonsillitis or the basic jaw structure.
- Central Sleep Apnea (CSA): It usually occurs in people with a history of cardiac or cerebrovascular disease. In this case, the brain does not send the signal to breathe to the muscles.
- Mixed Sleep Apnea (a.k.a. Complex Sleep Apnea Syndrome): This is a combination of OSA and CSA

How we can help
This centre offers a complete evaluation, diagnosis and treatment plan to address the particular needs of the patients who are suffering from sleep and breathing disorders. The benefits of a one-stop care for patients are timely treatment and an integrated approach. Diagnosis is supported by extensive on-site testing and high-quality holistic care delivered by specialist-led therapies.
We evaluate the patient on the basis of several parameters such as EEG, EOG (Eye Movement), ECG, Chin EMG (Muscle activity), bilateral anterior tibilis (legs), nasal and oral airflow, abdominal and thoracic effort and SaO2. These are monitored simultaneously on a polygraph while the subject is sleeping in order to rule out sleep disorders such as sleep apnea syndromes. The patient is monitored throughout the night and the test results are then analysed and interpreted. The patient is evaluated thoroughly to understand the underlying causes using supportive studies such as pulmonary function testing and chest X-ray, as well as CT scanning of the lungs, and regular follow-up, education and compliance will be emphasized if necessary.
